By Helen Steel, Managing Director at Streamlion Consulting

Founding a successful business is marked by both significant challenges and gratifying achievements. Success is not solely defined by monetary gain but by a range of factors. Helen Steel is Managing Director and Founder of Streamlion Consulting, a company she launched in 2015 to help SMEs find funding for growth and aid entrepreneurs in the first stages of their business development. To date, Streamlion Consulting has supported over 775 businesses with expert guidance on funding, growth strategies, and business development—helping them secure more than £14.5 million in direct funding and driving over £100 million in business growth. Now, Helen discusses her key learnings from the last ten years.

A decade in business is a milestone worth celebrating, and reaching this point has allowed me to reflect on the journey so far. When I founded Streamlion Consulting, I knew I wanted to help entrepreneurs and business owners unlock their potential, but I didn’t fully appreciate the depth of learning, resilience, and adaptability required to succeed. The past ten years have been a whirlwind of challenges, triumphs, and valuable lessons that have shaped both me and my business.

Here are ten key takeaways that have been instrumental in my journey:

Resilience is Everything

Running a business is a rollercoaster. Being able to adapt, pivot, and push through challenges is the key to long-term success.

Cash Flow is King

Without financial stability, even the best business ideas can struggle. Having a cash reserve provides a vital buffer for uncertain times.

Work with the Right Clients

Aligning with clients who share your values makes business more rewarding and ensures a smoother working relationship. Late payers or misaligned partnerships can drain time and energy.

Prioritise Self-Care

Avoiding burnout is crucial. Carving out non-negotiable ‘me time’ ensures you can continue to show up for your business and your clients.

Delight Your Customers

Exceptional customer experience is the foundation of long-term success. Happy clients not only return but also become your best advocates, referring new business your way.

Networking Opens Doors

Building strong relationships with fellow business owners creates opportunities for growth, collaboration, and shared success.

Protect Your Reputation

Your reputation is your most valuable asset. Guard it fiercely, as it takes years to build and moments to lose.

Know Your Worth

Pricing correctly and standing firm on your value is essential. Saying ‘no’ to the wrong deals and avoiding unnecessary discounts helps sustain profitability and confidence.

Invest in Strong Processes

Well-defined standard operating procedures (SOPs) and efficient systems save time, reduce stress, and set you ahead of the competition.

Over-Deliver on Value

Whether it’s clients, staff, or partners, making people feel valued fosters loyalty and long-term relationships.

Reflecting on ten years of Streamlion Consulting, I’ve realised that success is not just about financial growth—it’s about building something meaningful, forming lasting relationships, and continuously learning. Every challenge has provided an opportunity for growth, and every win has reinforced the importance of staying true to my vision.

For aspiring entrepreneurs, embracing these principles can help build a sustainable and rewarding business. The journey isn’t always easy, but with resilience, adaptability, and a focus on value, long-term success is absolutely achievable.

Here’s to the next decade of growth, resilience, and success!
