Simon Blockley, Managing Director of European operations at Guidant Global, has been promoted to Chief Executive Officer with immediate effect in a strategic move by the brand’s parent company, Impellam Group, to drive future growth.

With over 20 years’ experience in resourcing and managed service recruitment, Blockley originally joined Guidant Group in 2014. He was promoted from Client Service Director to Managing Director in 2017 and following the launch of Guidant Global in October 2018 – when existing Impellam Group businesses, US-based Bartech and UK-headquartered Guidant Group, came together – he took on the position of Managing Director EMEA.

In his new role Blockley will lead the provision of recruitment services in over 80 countries, driving Guidant Global in its management of over 200,000 people deployed with more than 90 clients every year. Guidant Global champions a better, more forward-thinking way of working and has a core philosophy of shifting the focus to people – the vibrant force that drives thriving businesses and creates energy and opportunity.

Commenting on his appointment, Simon Blockley, Chief Executive Officer, at Guidant Global, said: “It is an honor to be offered the opportunity to take the helm of this eminent and exciting brand on a truly international scale. This year sees us well placed to cement Guidant Global’s position as the leader in workforce solutions, and I have no doubt that Simon’s knowledge, experience and passion will enable him to take the business to unprecedented heights.”

Big data – the game changer reshaping the financial industry

Big data – the game changer reshaping the financial industry

Image

Almost half of finance professionals (45%) regard big data as the most influential trend in the financial sector, according to the Onguard FinTech Barometer survey. Despite more than one-third of respondents (36%) expecting big data to impact employment, very few think it will actually lead to job losses. In fact, more than three-quarters of finance professionals (87%) are confident that their jobs will still exist ten years from now.

The role of big data
The FinTech Barometer survey revealed that availability of data is a crucial factor for organisations. As many as 93% of companies use data and of these, 24% say their company is all about data. Therefore, it is hardly surprising that 45% of finance professionals see big data as a game changer that is reshaping the sector. Research shows that only 7% of companies do nothing with the data they collect and only 6% of finance professionals are unaware of how their company uses data.

New technologies and data acquisition and storage systems are advancing so rapidly that 43% of finance professionals believe financial service providers will essentially become IT companies over the next ten years. This, combined with the growing importance of big data, may explain why 30% of CFOs and other finance professionals anticipate having to develop data-analysis skills in the not-too-distant future.

Onguard CTO Marieke Saeij is fully aware of the value of big data: “As far as we are concerned, big data is not just a passing trend, so it is important that finance professionals learn how to harness it in their work. The ability to interpret the available data can add value, but for big data to be really useful it needs to be translated into actionable insights. At the moment many finance professionals fail to see how big data analysis relates to what they do, but it is the tool that can yield profound insights, improve performance and enhance customer experience.”

The Kings of Customisation

The Kings of Customisation

Image

Tim Williams and Tom Hogan are thirty something school friends from South Wales and the founders of YR – the world’s leading customisation company. In just six short years, YR has become the go-to destination for fashion retailers who want to offer consumers an on-demand, personalised fashion experience.

State-of-the art design software and printing technology combined with 27″ touch screens, enable anyone to create and print bespoke designs on t-shirts, trainers and accessories.  In fact, YR have made it possible to customise just about anything and because their service is on-demand, it is ticking a big box in the sustainability stakes.

From ‘humble beginnings’ in London’s Carnaby Street (where YR launched with the world’s first digital graffiti wall) to offices in New York, LA, Hong Kong and Tokyo, Tim and Tom have proved they are a force to be reckoned with.

DKNY, Michael Kors, Nike, Levi and L’Oréal are just some of the global fashion brands who have collaborated with the Brit start-up since it’s inception in 2013 and this year, YR is predicting to turnover a conservative £7m.

We had a quick chat with CEO Tim to find out what makes this fashtech company tick….

Combining sustainability with customisation, how do you ensure that you are constantly able to offer your clients cutting-edge solutions that meet their needs and are ahead of emerging market trends?

Customisation is all about making one of one, true on demand production. YR has always tried to tie that to incredible consumer experience as well, so whatever the production method of the finished item the customer can have a fun, engaging time creating the design. By focusing on the software experience, we can test new concepts and experiences, keeping at the cutting edge of tech. For example right now we are working on voice-based customisation, without having to invent new print or production techniques.

Having created the business with a friend, how do you combine friendship with business? Are there any challenges you face in this and how do you work to overcome them?

I think we have had a relatively easy ride! Fortunately, we are good friends but also both quite easy going, and we also respect each other’s roles. It’s important we are both aligned in where we want the business to move and how it will grow, this means that in whatever decisions we take we should be aligned in our response. Of course, there are issues and challenges now and again, I think not being in the same office is a help sometimes as we both have our own space. Most of the time any issue is easily resolved with a bit of time to think and then coming back together to work out the best way forward. Then making sure we spend quality time doing non-work things keeps our friendship – Tom has a love of wild camping so a trip away with our friends is a great way to remind us why we are friends and not just business partners.

What does the future have in store for YR and how are you looking to develop the brand even further?

YR want to be global leaders in on demand design and production, that means we plan on growing vertically as well as building on our in-store and online customisation platforms. Customisation is a super-interesting space at the moment, and it goes hand in hand with on demand production. Moving to on-demand is a huge task for brands but the benefits of vastly reduced inventory and more focused and nimble product offerings mean it’s a real focus right now. This is only going to increase, and we intend to work with our current and future customers to develop faster, more engaging and more efficient ways of producing products. We have expanded globally with offices in the US and Asia, now we want to build those markets and  a truly global partner for our clients.

Image

Do you undertake any celebrity collaborations, and how do these benefit your brand?

Actually, we don’t really! We have worked with several individuals since we started but these tend to be fairly small engagements, of course celebrity endorsement is important for many campaigns and product launches. Luckily, as we aren’t consumer facing as such, we leave that part to our customers!

DATA PROTECTION DAY - ARE HUMAN RIGHTS BEING INFRINGED?

DATA PROTECTION DAY – ARE HUMAN RIGHTS BEING INFRINGED?

Image

Monday, 28 January is the internationally recognised day for Data Protection.

Privacy and data protection consultancy firm priviness, which positions itself as ‘human rights champions’, is calling for companies to be aware of both the moral and economic dangers of personal data breaches.

This week, Google were fined €50m for a personal data breach.  The company were found, by French data protection authority CNIL, to have been processing personal data without informing its customers or collecting the appropriate consent.

Founder of priviness, Sandy Gilchrist, explained: “In my mind, this is a landmark case.  CNIL responded as if Google had infringed human rights, which was a wholly appropriate response.  People tend to associate a ‘personal data breach’ with issues such as hacking or leaks.  But if you don’t know what’s happening to your personal data your fundamental rights and freedoms are being impacted.  That’s why Google got fined.”

Mr Gilchrist reports that the vast majority of companies are not adequately protecting personal data.  He champions protecting human rights but also points out the economic implications.  Companies in breach of compromising personal data risk a fine of 4% of annual global turnover or £20 million.

He said: “Given Google’s annual global turnover of $110bn, they got off fairly lightly for such an infringement of human rights and lack of transparency.  However, morally and in terms of customer trust they’ll have lost out considerably.

“People are fed up of big companies letting them down in relation to their data.  We see priviness as advocates of human rights.  We want to defend individual’s rights by educating the business world on their privacy and data protection obligations.  We want companies to be transparent and not to lose the moral high ground.”

Data Protection Day was started in 2006 by the Council of Europe as a response to the increasing use and processing of individual’s personal data.  On January 28 the Council held its first data protection convention, known as “Convention 108” and was opened to signature.  Data Protection Day is now celebrated globally and is called Privacy Day outside Europe*.

Mr Gilchrist founded priviness to provide guidance to businesses regarding their privacy and data protection obligations.  The company offers training, drafting of policy and process documentation, audits, and implementation services.  Organisations not based in the EU can also instruct priviness as their representative in the EU – it is a GDPR requirement to have a representative in the EU if organisations outside the EU are selling to individuals in the EU.

A Charity Championing the Management of Chronic Pain

A Charity Championing the Management of Chronic Pain

Image

Established over 30 years ago, Pain Association Scotland is a national charity dedicated to delivering self-management courses and monthly groups throughout Scotland, Northumbria and North Wales for those burdened with chronic pain. In October, Sonia Cottom, Director of Pain Association, was recognised in CEO Monthly’s Leadership Excellence programme for her dedication to the cause and company. We spoke to Sonia to find out more about the life-changing work that they do.

Good leaders are defined by their proactive approach to their work, and indomitable drive to succeed. The best leaders can adapt to overcome challenges, and seek new opportunities for growth, often in extremely competitive environments. These are the qualities that we expect from directors, CEOs and managers all over the world, but they seem to fall short in capturing the scope of Sonia’s responsibilities at Pain Association Scotland. As Director, she has helped to deliver services that have aided in the relief of chronic pain, a severely overlooked area of British Healthcare. As part of her work collaborating with NHS Boards and the Scottish Government, she has helped realign future strategies to help tackle the UK’s chronic pain problem. However, these significant achievements only serve to scratch the surface of Sonia’s work.

To start, Sonia offers a brief overview of her company and their work: “The Association provides self-management models of community-based training and education programmes for people burdened with chronic pain. The intensive courses are provided for both primary and secondary care referrals and the locally monthly groups are not only provided to help people maintain all the skills which they have learned over the courses, but people can also self-refer to the local group in order to access the all-important peer support network.”

As you might expect, patients are truly at the heart of the Association’s service model, as Sonia takes a moment to explain: “Patients are at the centre of everything that we do, and in order to ensure they are provided with the best opportunity in empowering them to be able to manage their chronic pain and they have access to the best treatment pathway, it is imperative they I use the knowledge, evidence and understanding gained to help influence and underpin on-going and future service delivery.”

“Over the years, this has included producing the Association’s first Journal of Chronic Pain and the importance of self-management, contributing evidence to the British Journal of Pain, and the International Journal of Applied Sciences, contributing to the Chronic Pain Policy Coalition – a national call to action in the House of Lords – and taking part in Scottish Government Parliamentary debates and call for evidence sessions.” It is clear that Sonia is fighting constantly to raise awareness across multiple avenues, realising that change needs to occur from the very top to make a difference.

Further, Sonia truly believes that chronic pain needs to be a national priority. It’s management, and potential treatment, have the capacity to affect other sectors on an immense scale. Indeed, as Sonia mentions, self-management leads to a 73% reduction in GP visits, and a 93% improvement in quality of life due to empowering patients to change the locus of control – in other words, the belief that they personally can make a difference to their chronic pain, without it taking control and defining their life. All of this leads to less stress on NHS resources, and, on a wider scope, an improved economy.

Of course, Sonia doesn’t work by herself, and her team provide essential support in securing the overall success of the Association. “They are absolutely key. We are a small team of five and each have different backgrounds and strengths. I will not say that managing their expectations is easy – we need to remain ahead of the game in the way we operate and quite often, when you satisfy your funders and implement the relevant changes, staff can often put up barriers until you highlight the potential benefits and help them realise that you, as a CEO, are on a journey too and potentially out of your comfort zone.”

In her closing comments, Sonia discusses the challenges that she has overcome on her journey to raise awareness of chronic pain as a priority in the UK: “As a charity we work collaboratively with the NHS Chronic Pain services throughout Scotland and we are often met with resistance around “evidence-based medicine”. Commissioning a Third Sector organisation to deliver a non-medical bio-psycho-social model with outcomes continues to be rather a new concept to the NHS, and we have had many obstacles to overcome along the way. The NHS has a tendency to suffer from institutional hegemony, holding onto ideas – there is the common assumption that only medical models are good for patients and they fail to listen to evidence which proves otherwise, even when it is thrust in front of them. There is a battle for acceptance.”

Finally, when it comes to the future of Pain Association Scotland: “My vision is to increase the collaborative work with Healthcare Professionals where my focus will be to ensure that the Association continues to identify where we can provide added value to Health Boards, helping them achieve their chronic pain wait time initiatives as well as looking for opportunities for service improvement and delivery.  Having a strategy is great, but the organisation needs to be open to change and be able to adapt and remain fluid. Ultimately, I want to lead the Association in implementing better patient pathways to ensure patients have better and easier access to self-management at a much earlier stage of their journey.”

A Leader Forging the Future of the Debt Capital Market

A Leader Forging the Future of the Debt Capital Market

Image

Bedford Row Capital is a boutique advisory firm which specialises in assisting SMEs in raising debt capital. In October, Bedford Row’s Chief Executive Officer, Scott Levy, was recognised by CEO Monthly Magazine as 2018’s Finance CEO of the Year for London. Following this success, we spoke with Scott to find out how he has capitalised on a niche gap in global finance markets.

Disruption defines today’s financial landscape, as established firms look to distinguish and differentiate themselves in an increasingly competitive sector. Yet, opportunities for growth and expansion seem plentiful on the back of emerging technologies and expansive paradigm shifts. As Scott explains, Bedford Row Capital was formed in response to such an opportunity: “Bedford Row Capital was established in 2016 because of a gap in the market which prevented SMEs from tapping the debt capital markets. The Company has helped more than thirty companies raise listed debt which has included not only conventional asset-backed debt but also shariah-compliant sukuk and short-term commercial paper.”
Scott continues, moving on to detail Bedford’s area of expertise and client base. “Bedford Row Capital’s role is to support the process of creating listed debt securities. We provide an end to end service which assists in the structuring, formation and listing of debt securities – traditionally, this was a service provided by merchant banks but has been rationalised out of existence. As a specialist in asset-backed debt securities, the Company provides
both project management and servicing to support the ongoing obligations of stock exchanges, auditors and security trustees as well as providing transparency to investors through regulatory updates. Equally, we support a wide range of corporates with business interests from Vancouver to Tasmania (moving east to west, of course); clients who have real assets and identifiable cashflows who can benefit from the opportunity to raise funds from the international debt capital markets.”
As we come to the end of the interview, Scott takes a moment to emphasise the role of the Company’s staff in securing
their success. “Ultimately, the Company excels because of the quality of its team and the effort they put in to ensure that all stakeholders receive timely, accurate and clear information. We have a dynamic, multi-lingual team which delivers outstanding efficiency and transparency in its operations.”
Finally, in his closing comments, Scott discusses Bedford Row Capital’s projections for the future of debt capital markets, following a year of volatility and uncertainty in the greater financial sector. “We expect to see strong interest at the shorter end of the market (commercial paper) as low (or negative) interest rates penalise
cash rich businesses. There is no end in sight to a return to normality for bank lending and with no respite from the ECB or Bank of England, the debt capital markets will be the main source of funding for asset-owning businesses.” Whatever the future may hold, Bedford Row Capital Advisers remain one of the pioneering stalwarts of an emerging and vital sector.

A Bastion of British Digital Infrastructure

A Bastion of British Digital Infrastructure

Nominet is a profit with a purpose company, operating at the heart of the UK’s internet infrastructure, and supporting businesses and customers worldwide. In late October, the firm’s Chief Executive Officer, Russell Haworth, was recognised by CEO Monthly Magazine as the Technology CEO of the Year for 2018. Following this success, Russell took some time to discuss Nominet’s vital role in the modern, digital-first world.

The digital age has been a disruptive force on the global business landscape, changing how the world operates at a fundamental level and unlocking a wealth of opportunity for companies to thrive in a way that would have been impossible in a pre-digital world.

Nominet works at the heart of national digital infrastructure and has operated the registry for the .UK Domain for over twenty years. This has grown to become one of the largest domain registries in the world, relied upon by millions of businesses and customers.

As CEO, Russell is well placed to explain Nominet’s role and highlight the diverse range of work currently ongoing at the company.  “The .UK registry is a standard-bearer for high quality of service, reliability and trust. We work hard to keep it that way, investing in our technology and working with law enforcement to support the Government’s ambition to make the UK the safest place in the world to do business online.

“Our years of keeping the .UK domain safe have equipped us with skills and expertise that can be used by others who need reliable, trusted and secure infrastructure. For example, we now provide a range of cyber security solutions to UK Government and enterprises globally.”

Derived from the fields of acoustics, data science, artificial intelligence and data compression, Nominet’s NTX technology detects and blocks threats hidden in Domain Name System (DNS) traffic. DNS plays a critical role in every network –connecting humanly understandable domain names to internet protocol (IP) addresses understood by machines. Yet it is often overlooked, leaving an ‘open backdoor’ for cyber criminals to utilise it for malicious activity, from malware, phishing and botnets to data exfiltration.

Russell explains: “We believe NTX represents a fundamental shift in a disparate and overwhelming security landscape, removing the burden on security teams and providing greater visibility by operating at a deeper level to capture more threats.  This is not just our belief: NTX is being used by the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre to great effect.”

Nominet is also able to use its extensive experience from running a registry to provide registry services to external clients, currently operating the back end infrastructure for 35 domains including .blog, .london and .bbc.

There is also an enthusiasm for pushing ahead into new and innovative digital technologies at Nominet, as part of its focus on creating a digital future that benefits society more widely.. Russell explains:

“As the number of devices connected wirelessly increases and their use expands, we must find ways to use spectrum, a limited resource, more efficiently.  We’ve developed a means of dynamically allocating and optimising spectrum and .our WaveDB tools are already being used to help connect rural communities.  This technology should also be central in future plans on how new spectrum, not least 5G, is managed.”

Nominet is licensed by Ofcom in the UK and the US regulator, the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) has approved WaveDB for deployment in the US. One of Nominet’s newest partnerships is with Microsoft via the Airband initiative to help improve connectivity for rural Americans.

Underpinning all this activity is a commitment to operate as a profit with a purpose organisation. Russell says: “A large proportion of the profits from the company’s commercial activities are used for public benefit, supporting the work of organisations such as the Prince’s Trust as well as funding our own projects that support greater connectivity, inclusivity and security online for all. To date, we have donated £45m to tech for good initiatives,  and we intend to help improve the lives of one million people by 2020.”

Russell and Nominet are definitely looking ahead:. “Our ambition  is huge. We are delivering a strategy to ensure we continue to operate a flagship registry, grow our cyber business and explore the vast potential of new wireless technologies. We want a vibrant digital future for all, and are committed to making it happen.”

Russell is a board member of TechUK, Chair of Digital Leaders and on the advisory board of cyber incubator CyLon.

Spearheading the Future of Business Through AI and Automation

Spearheading the Future of Business Through AI and Automation

Image

Rainbird is a unique automated decision-making platform that is powered by AI but governed by human rules. In October, the firm’s CEO, Ben Taylor, was recognised by CEO Monthly Magazine as the Technology CEO of the Year for 2018. On the back of this, we spoke to Ben who offered a deeper look into Rainbird’s cutting-edge technological innovations.

By all considerations, AI is set to redefine the future of business, regardless of sector, industry, field or region. The scope of its impact is vast, heralding a new age akin to the industrial age before it. We are on the threshold of a paradigm shift, and businesses the world over will have to learn to adapt to this technology to thrive.

One business which has capitalised early on the benefits of artificial intelligence and automation is Rainbird, who have utilised the unique qualities of these new technologies to offer swift, smart and reliable decision-making solutions that are designed to amplify the human capital in their client’s workplaces. In Ben’s own words, “we enable any business to replicate and scale the high-value, complex reasoning capabilities of its subject matter experts, in order to make better, more consistent automated judgements.”

“Essentially, with Rainbird, any organisation can cost-effectively synthesise and scale the decision-making of their best people, and access the rationale behind these decisions via an in-built audit trail, which makes it ideally suited to any regulated industry. We’ve already disrupted industries via projects in finance, banking, automotive, health, retail and law.”

Among these clients are some of the largest names in the world of business, including PwC, Taylor Wessing, Deloitte and Grant Thornton, to name but a few. On the subject of clients, Ben takes a moment to emphasise Rainbird’s work with community healthcare service, Fluid Motion, which was “particularly gratifying for the effect it has had on the lives of musculoskeletal condition sufferers.” What is clear, is that Rainbird’s clientele are comprised of a variety of pace-setters who are using their solutions to further distance themselves from peers and competitors alike.

Above all else, Ben credits Rainbird’s enduring success to his team, who champion a client-centric approach to their work at all times. “We place the excellence of our staff at the heart of everything we do. Ensuring we’re client value focused and maintaining our core identity, while continuing to grow with a team of more than 30 and several suppliers and partners has been an exciting challenge. The key to meeting it has been sticking to our guns and selectively hiring ambitious, action-oriented and quality people.”

Moving on with the topic of challenges, Ben takes a moment to detail those that Rainbird – and others in this competitive industry- are facing in the current climate. “There is always the challenge of regulation, particularly in the industries that we target. Fortunately, we’re usually very well positioned to deal with these challenges, since the tide of regulation in industries like finance and law has been moving towards protecting consumers from black box systems. There are a lot of businesses trying to work out how to make machine learning systems explainable, so they can switch them back on again, whereas our technology is already explainable – Rainbird has an in-built audit trail that explains every decision made.”

Finally, in his closing comments, Ben discusses Rainbird’s future as they look to expand their global footprint in the market. “Looking to the future, we aim to better serve our growing international customer base by growing our network of partners. These included Heron, a wholly owned London-based AI consulting and solutions company, Hong Kong-based JOS Group, covering Asia plus a string of partners soon to be announced in North America and Europe. Meanwhile, our research and development team are working on materialising the next generation of innovation and expect to announce a string of patent applications later this year. As always, our events circuit motors forward, with exhibitions already booked at a number high profile events, including our recently announced sponsorship at Legal Technology Forum 2019 and partnership with TechNOVA for their 2019 financial services conference.”

HR Solutions Designed for the Modern Workplace

HR Solutions Designed for the Modern Workplace

Image

BirdDogHR is a national leader in talent management solutions and services for skilled trade industries. In October, the firm’s CEO, Todd Skokan, was named by CEO Monthly Magazine as 2018’s CEO of the Year for the United States. We spoke with Todd to find out how BirdDogHR has reimagined the HR sector to meet the comprehensive needs and demands of the modern workplace.

The digital world has revolutionised the HR industry. In the wake of automation and AI, human capital has become – perhaps paradoxically – more treasured, as companies realise that the best talent has the ability to elevate operations and procedures in a way where machines cannot compete. With this in mind, it can be considered a natural step that BirdDogHR has synergised talent management and technology to create a cutting-edge, integrated human capital management system, yielding the benefits offered by cloud technology to recruit the best possible talent for their clientele.

Yet, this is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to BirdDogHR’s services, as Todd explains: “BirdDogHR specialises in high-consequence and government contracting industries since they have unique needs. Our solutions are built with the most rigorous compliance needs in mind. Our client base is comprised of federal contractors, manufacturers, engineers, architects, and supply chain management, to name but a few.”

These solutions are comprised of targeted and tested services designed to handle a plethora of their client’s needs, including recruiting, onboarding, learning, performance management, succession planning, HR management, Affordable Care Act compliance, payroll, benefits administration, and attendance. Alongside this, they have the ability to provide managed services that act as an extension of their clients’ Human Resource teams.

Moving on, Todd takes a moment to discuss what he believes has secured the firm’s enduring success. “Primarily, BirdDogHR excels in delivering peace of mind to our customers during documentation audits. When federal contractors are audited by the Office of Federal Contract and Compliance Programs (OFCCP), they must provide information on hiring decisions and more. For large clients, this can be a huge undertaking as the OFCCP requires extensive reporting. We take care of tracking and storing that information for our customers, and many of our customers pass these audits with 100% compliance.”

Finally, when it comes to the future of BirdDogHR, “We recently became part of the Arcoro family of companies. Arcoro companies offer a complete human capital management suite that can be scaled as businesses grow. In January 2019 we are excited to begin offering products from InfinityHR that will further assist our customers in their core HR needs.”
